Description

Radio Operations Centre – We're in charge of all radio communications at BornHack (the two-way "walkie-talkie" type and as a new thing; our very own FM broadcast station at 102.8 MHz! – for DECT phones, head over to the POC.

The following is divided in two sections. The first concerns the FM broadcast – the second covers the two-way radios/ “walkie talkies”

BornHack FM: Call for participation!

This year we will be setting up and operating our very own FM transmitter. We have acquired a license to transmit on 102.8 MHz using 3.8 W (ERP). The technical side of things is pretty much done, but what does a broadcast need most of all? – Content! Something to broadcast. We cannot broadcast music for various reasons so we need to fill the program with interesting talk radio. It can be anything you can imagine as long as it is in line with the BornHack Code of Conduct.

There will be a workshop on Thursday on how to operate the studio gear – time TBD, keep an eye on the Program. Meanwhile we have a Signal group where you may drop your ideas!: https://signal.group/#CjQKIMECH0SHPvOjLcKr-oP10ujL-5vfmVw3ccSRQw1KQPeKEhCXteG899bIjG1LPkFTl2MZ

Two-way radios: At the InfoDesk volunteers can pick up a radio for facilitating communication on the make sure we always have a freshly-charged radio so our awesome volunteers can always come by and pick up a handset at the InfoDesk when they need one.

On our license we have four channels in total; two duplex and two simplex.

We operate two UHF repeaters. One for general volunteer use and one for CERT use only.

The channels are as follows (beware that different information is listed elsewhere on the website! will be updated shortly (16/07/2025):

P1 - General communication. Covers the entire venue and most of Gelsted.

P2 - Infrastructure. Designated for trouble shooting on network, power, water etc.

P3 - Teams. For small teams working together on various projects.

P4 - CERT. For emergencies only and on-duty CERT personnel. Covers the campsite and immediate surroundings.

The General channel intended for volunteers to make it easier to do their job during the event. Instead of yelling across the camp ground use the radio and make a call on P1!

The CERT channel is only for emergencies and on-duty CERT personnel.

Some volunteers bring their own radios. It's our responsibility to make sure that they are provided with the relevant information so they can configure their radios accordingly.

It's also our job to make sure people are comfortable with using the radios and know how to operate them. We introduce volunteers to radio protocols and lingo for use on the venue, so that we can avoid chaos and ensure clear, effective communications.

If you have questions about the radios, radio systems or radio in general you may post them in our Signal group. This is also where you can request assistance with radio programming in case you have brought your own radio and need assistance.

Note: Frequencies are available in a pinned message in the Signal group!
