Background: Chatcontrol is a proposed EU law that introduces automatic scanning of communication on the internet (including end-to-end encrypted communication) to detect child sexual abuse. However, from an ethical, technical and from a legal perspective there are many reasons why this is an unrealistic and bad idea.

I will review the story of the law including recent developments and I will discuss what comes next in the legislative process. I will also explain why chatcontrol is the wrong approach and I will try to discuss better solutions for protecting children online.
