Carina Haupt

Carina Haupt is head of the Sustainable Software Engineering group as well as deputy head of the Intelligent and Distributed Systems department of the Institute for Software Technology of DLR. Her aim is to support domain scientists by creating software and process based solutions for their day to day problems. Her research topics are software engineering in the scientific context, open source, and knowledge and data management.

Carina is founding member of the de-RSE e.V. association, conference chair of the deRSE19 conference, and took part in the organisation of several open source and Python community conferences within Germany over the last years.

Carina has a background in Computer Science and worked at the University of Bonn, Fraunhofer SCAI and in the industry, before joining DLR.

RSEs are Research Software Engineers, and in my opinion, hackers might make great RSEs. In this talk I will give you an insight into software development in research. I will present you the tasks scientists face today, the struggle of software not being acknowledged as a valuable outcome, the missing opportunities, but also I will talk about the communities forming and the shift we slowly see to take place in academia.
