Collaborative Artworks From Packet Captures. Most of us at BornHack have solid internal representations of abstract and difficult-to-understand concepts that are not shared with the general public, like network protocols and their behavior in computer networks. This workshop will explore how we can express these complex ideas, by coding dynamic visualizations together. As a participant, you will be assigned a branch in a git repo, which will be your canvas. Each repo will be equipped with p5.js, and a neatly parsed (and deeply interesting) packet capture that you can use as input for your display. For a fixed time-span, you will have free reign to code whichever dynamic visualizations you want, based on your given packet capture. However, at various points throughout the workshop, you will be forced to hand off your branch to another participant, and continue work on someone else’s branch, establishing a ring of collaboration within the group. Rather than making a series of textbook-style diagrams and explanations, the workshop will end with the creation of chaotic artistic expressions that explore the collective’s understanding of these deeply technical and otherwise invisible concepts.
