Establishing an international network against data centers Feedback

The world currently finds itself in the midst of a feverish data center construction boom. New projects are being announced on a weekly basis, each with a greater wattage than the previous. Tall tales of sustainability are omnipresent in press releases, and lobby groups pride themselves of representing the companies that are building the very backbone of the digital transformation.

However, data centers are power hungry, thirsty, noisy and not least ugly. They currently represent 2% of global power usage. In Denmark, they are on track to consume 20% of the total annual power consumption by 2030.

Thus far, the industry has successfully sold their visions to local politicians who welcome any investment with open arms. This is a huge democratic issue: power is a public good which we all rely on. The build-out of new data centers will increase power bills and destabilize the grid, and in worst case cause brownouts. Not to mention the climate and environmental destruction which will follow.

That is why this topic needs much more attention.

Therefore, we invite European and international hackers, grassroot activists, civil society organizations, local politicians and media to a workshop where we focus on how to resist and to stop new data centers.

We'll present studies that show why data centers are harmful for local communities, the environment, the climate and European independence on foreign tech.

We'll give an overview of groups and organizations that oppose data centers in Europe and examples of their accomplishments.

Finally, but most importantly, we invite you participants to help create an international "stop data center network", where knowledge, experiences, strategies, tools, campaigns etc. can be shared.

We'll treat participants with coffee, cookies and a cold soda or beer.
