Yes\n\nEuropean governments are proposing vague legislation that would li

he message is sent (client-side scanning). This is bad.\n\nThe legislation
has been promoted under names like "fighting child sexual\nabuse"\, by lo
bbyists promoting a proprietary screening service.\nWe don't have good rea
son to think such scanning would in fact prevent\nchild sexual abuse.\n\nM
oreover\, to scan messages this way would in practice require that we fore
go\nend-to-end encryption. Client-side scanning would be terrible for info
 rmation\nsecurity\, data protection\, privacy\, freedom\, &c.\n\nIt happen
s only I am presenting\, but the idea for this talk came\nfrom discussions

DESCRIPTION:URL: https://bornhack.dk/bornhack-2022/program/exploring-the-d
 egrees-of-freedom-in-designing-interactive-fiction/\n\nSpeaker(s): Niels G
 . W. Serup\n\nRecorded: Yes\n\nStreamed: Yes\n\nI have had an interest in
the overarching area of interactive fiction (IF) for many years. IF cover
 s such diverse areas as:\n\n - text adventure games\,\n - choose-your-ow
 n-adventure books\,\n - visual novels\,\n - multi-user dungeons\, and\n
  - textual elements in mainstream games\, such as dialogue trees.\n\nI wou
ld like to make my own text-based game\, so for this talk I want to explor
e the design space of IF in order to figure out what kind of game I'll be
making.\n\nIF has been popular for over 50 years and is still being active
ly created. As such\, much has been written about it\, and I won't be abl
e to cover even close to everything. I'll start off by giving a basic ove
rview\, but most of the talk will concern itself with the specific subtopi
cs of IF that I have found to be especially interesting and open to fun ex
periments. It'll be like thinking aloud\, except hopefully better structu
red. Fun subtopics include:\n\n - The ease of iterative development: Eve
rything is text\, so it's easy to change major elements or restructure par
ts of a game.\n - The possibilities of multi-player storycrafting: Assumi
ng the end goal is to create a fulfilling story for multiple people playin
g the same game\, what are the different ways of harnessing the creative o
utput of more than one person in a structured way?\n - Simulated world vs
. static graph of choices (and everything in-between): The underlying tech
nology should not matter to the user enjoying a piece of IF\, but the unde
rlying model for your IF is likely to affect your design choices in other
parts of your game. Where does a good compromise lie?\n - Computer-assis
ted narratives: You don't have to write a story on your own — you can al
so ask a computer to do that. That can be fun in itself\, but there is al
so a middle road where you're still the main author\, but maybe use a comp
uter tool to aid you in exploring plots and character traits.\n - Ideas o
f IF that can also be applied to non-interactive fiction: The normal repre
sentation of an ordinary book is (essentially) a list of sentences\, where
each sentence describe something in the world. What other IF-inspired rep
resentations could be used\, and how can we guarantee that we can encode n
arrative goals that can be fulfilled by our story?\n\nOn the practical sid
e of things I'll touch upon a few existing IF systems that I think are int
eresting\, but the main focus will be on whatever small experiments I have
coded myself.\n\nWho knows\, maybe this talk itself will also contain int
eractive choices that you\, the audience\, need to make...

ongoing modernization efforts of the software developed inside The Tor Pr
oject -- the organization behind the most widely deployed anonymity networ
k on this planet. We will look at upcoming features and changes to the cor
e technology that drives the Tor network and why a Browser may no longer b
e the only product we have to provide for the user-base that is so crucial
in need of Tor's anonymity properties for safe internet access.\n\nThe To
r ecosystem is currently going through a more extensive modernization phas
e where we are simplifying our goals slightly to make space for larger pro
jects that we find necessary.\n\nThis work includes implementing a new\, m
ore memory-safe Tor implementation in the Rust programming language named
Arti. This work will make it easier for application developers to integrat
e their applications and benefit from the safety features that Tor can pro
vide. \n\nAdditionally\, we will talk about some recent or upcoming change
s to the network:\n\n- Give a status update on deploying modern congestion
control algorithms in the Tor network. This work should significantly enh
ance the performance barrier that most Tor users experience.\n- The roadma
p towards UDP support in the client and relay software. This work should a
llow more modern use-cases of the Tor software such as voice and video com
munication\, WebRTC\, and other protocols that leverage datagram-based dat
a transfer.\n- Move to more modern cryptography in Tor's protocols\, inclu
ding support for Post-quantum cryptography and why this is needed.\n- Allo
wing Tor users to access the network using a VPN-like tunneling mechanism
as an alternative to simply web-browsing and other socks5 enabled applicat
 ions.

where all the brightest operations people with infrastructure skills go.
\nBut going from the obvious anti pattern\, that a DevOps silo is\, to som
ething better is a journey and not something most organisations manage to
do quickly if at all. \nI'd like to take you through the journey that Univ
ersal Robots has had\, and explaining step by step what the challenges are
\, both technical and engineering related.\n\nFurthermore I'd like to show
a few examples of tooling in the robotic world\, where cloud native and K
ubernetes are not always available\, as well as point to areas where robot
ics is "just software like the rest". \n\nThe talk deals with different ar
